DIY Surfboard shaping with Backwood – 23rd to 30st of April

Build your own board out of wood and surf it at the end of the week in the Atlantic.

The shaper Martin Weiss from Backwood will personally lead and accompany the workshop where your own board will be created. (

The board will be finished within the week so that you can surf it at the end of the workshop.
The appropriate shape will be discussed with the participants in advance with the workshop leader Martin Weiss.

You can choose your future and self shaped surfboard between these categories:

– short board: up to 7` feet board length (cost: 600€)- mid length: 7`-9` feet board length (cost: 700€)- Longboard: from 9` feet board length (cost: 850€)Construction of our surfboards

The Shape:
The boards are designed in 3-D and virtually already tested for flow characteristics and possible construction problems. We develop our shapes with the help of different CAD software. We then build a prototype, which we try extensively in the wave.The core:
The core of our hollow wood surfboards consists of a laminated wood frame. We usually use 6.5 mm birch multiplex here, which is film-coated for particularly high demands. We have the skeleton of our serially manufactured boards laser-cut to the millimeter.Top and bottom:
We plank the skeleton with 6mm thick solid wood strips. The woods are carefully matched, and the grain is mirrored to create a visually appealing product.Rails:
We use the bead and cove method on our mass-produced boards.Valve:
Since our boards are airtight, we need to equalize pressure between the inside and outside. To ensure this, we install a simple stainless steel screw in each board. To not have to remove the screw after each use, we are currently developing a pressure equalization valve, which will be installed in addition in the future.Coating:
Our boards are currently laminated with glass cloth and epoxy. However, we are developing a new construction method to work without these materials to offer an even more sustainable product.UV Protection:
Epoxy laminates are susceptible to UV. For this reason, our boards receive an additional UV-resistant coating.Stability:
Wooden boards are far more stable than traditional foam boards, giving them a longer lifespan. Since we also seal our boards inside, even significant damage is repairable.Weight:
Wooden boards are usually slightly heavier than ultra-light foam boards. The weight can also vary greatly depending on the wood. Our 6`3″ weighs around 4kg. Despite all of this, our boards are surprisingly light.
